Choosing Between Types of Roofing Materials
When it’s time to invest in a new roof, it’s important to take into account a material’s ability to withstand the regional climate, its aesthetic appearance, and its durability. Below are the pros and cons of a few types of roofing materials.
Clay Tiles
Clay tiles are a mainstay of Mediterranean and southwestern style architecture. Clay roof tiles can be selected to match the paving of a home’s walkway or backyard patio. With the right maintenance, clay tiles can last for half of a century. Concrete tiles are similar to clay tiles, but are more energy-efficient. The weight of clay tiles means that the home will likely require reinforcement to safely support them.
Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are the most common type of roofing material. They are fairly inexpensive and available in many different colors. They aren’t as durable as tile roofing and can blow off the roof during severe weather events. Many suburban homes use asphalt shingles even though they don’t often last longer than 25 years.
Metal Types of Roofing Materials
Metal tiles are extremely durable and can stand up to harsh weather conditions such as snow, hail, and heavy rain. They’re expensive, but they last for at least 40 years, nearly twice as long as asphalt shingles. Installation is easier because metal tiles are lightweight. You can choose from stainless steel, copper, or zinc.
Metal roofing is also available in panels. This type of roofing is lightweight, very durable, and comes in many color options. Metal is often made with a high percentage of recycled materials, making it a good option for eco-conscious consumers. This type of roofing won’t warp, crack, or rot and can last upwards of 50 years.
Wooden Roofing Options
Wooden shingles offer a classic look for your property. If cleaned regularly from mold and algae, they weather to a neutral gray color over time. Many Cape Cod and Tudor-style homes are finished with wooden roofing materials. If your local fire code allows you to build with wooden shakes or shingles, purchase a product that has been treated for Class A fire resistance. Well-maintained wooden roofing is attractive and can last for 30 years.
